EMDR stands for ‘Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing’. It is a therapy technique used to relieve psychological distress and has been proven effective for traumatic experiences and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It is an effective technique used across the lifespan in children, adolescents and adults.
EMDR techniques are performed by trained specialist such as psychologists or mental health professionals. If you are currently seeing a therapist and believe you would benefit from this technique, you can be referred to our EMDER services for the relevant sessions and continue with your ongoing therapist post EMDER sessions.
In the initial EMDR sessions, the therapist will gather all relevant background information, to build a solid case conceptualisation of the client’s struggles. This will allow the therapist in collaboration with the client, to identify a specific problem (i.e. traumatic event) as a focus for the treatment session.
The therapist will then guide the client to focus on the traumatic event, followed by a series of questions to target the memory. At this point, the therapist will begin the eye movements or other bilateral stimulation (i.e. tappers, audio, light) on the client. These eye movements are used until the memory becomes less confronting and is instead associated with positive thoughts and believes.
EMDR has been an effective treatment for clients who have experience trauma, however it also helps treats a range of mental health conditions including:
