Cogmed is an evidence-based cognitive training program for anyone who wants to sustainably improve their working memory capacity. It is a program that can make a significant difference to a individual who has attention and learning difficulties.
As with all effective cognitive training programs, they require hard work and commitment in order for changes to occur. They depend very largely on the specificity and intensity of practice and on the participant’s readiness to train. It is for this reason that the Cogmed program is only ever provided through an accredited Cogmed coach. We know that when a coach is present, adherence to the program is greatly enhanced. It’s a bit like having a personal coach for the gym – when there is someone watching your progress and supporting you through the challenging days, you are more likely to successfully see it through. You are more likely to notice and practice your new skills and get the best results.
Working memory is the ability to keep information in your mind for a short time, focus on a task, and remember what to do next. It’s not just storage of data, but the ability to keep information active for long enough to do something with it. Working memory skills are strongly associated with children’s abilities to learn. Working memory supports many of the activities that children routinely engage in at school including:
1. Controlling attention
2. Remembering instructions
3. Organising information
4. Focusing resisting distractions complex thinking
While we all have working memory constraints however, for about 15% of school aged children poor working memory significantly slows educational progress.
It used to be thought that working memory was static but in the last 10-15 years, research into neuroplasticity shows that you can significantly improve working memory capacity through focused, repeated and intensive training. Cogmed emerged out of this neuroscience research and continues to be distinguished by the amount of independent, peer-reviewed research into its effectiveness.
Cogmed Training Programs Cogmed Working Memory Training is built around three easy to-use, age-specific software applications. The working memory exercises are the same across all 3 versions. It is the interface that varies depending on age and engagement strategy and your practitioner can choose the right program for each child.
The Cogmed program consists of 25 sessions typically completed over a 5-6 week period. Each session is between 30-45 minutes. The software automatically adjusts its complexity level for each child and each exercise, in real time, for maximised training effects.
Cogmed training can improve working memory substantially. Working memory is a cognitive function critical for focusing, resisting distractions, and for complex thinking. Improved working memory capacity generalises to improved attention and learning capacity and allows students to absorb information-based instruction more effectively and in turn strengthen their performance in maths and reading comprehension. 8 out of 10 users who complete training show measurable effects; working memory capacity is increased, leading to a better ability to focus, follow instructions, and stay on task.
