Our school readiness program Little Learner’s Academy is facilitated by trained clinicians that use targeted activities to provide a child with a set of skills that include social and emotional competencies that allow a child to learn to regulate their own emotions and understand others, engage in adequate play skills, promote social skills and effective problem solving and conflict management.
The children will learn about personal space and boundaries, the concept of thinking about others in the space, whole body listening, learn to identify emotions in themselves and others. Further children will be provided with a foundation of skills in pro-social behaviours and inhibit behaviours by learning to make wise choices and understanding about cause and effect of actions. We use mental mappings, problem solving skills, and emotional self-regulation and learning new coping skills to widen their window of tolerance.
Targeted through physical and embodied activities, children engage in gross motor activities through group games, fine-motor skills with crafts and manual activities. We further develop our early learners about the power of mindfulness through kids yoga activities, learn about personal boundaries, space and movement through dance, role play and integrate imaginative games while learning posture, balance and coordination. We also incorporate knowledge on the value of nutritious lunchboxes and healthy eating.
Children will be offered opportunities to review key concepts such as shapes, colours, numbers, practice their alphabet through sensory-motor activities and movement. Children at an early age, require learning to be experiential and sensory, therefore, to ensure these key pre-academic skills are build, the child will learn through nursery songs, and rhymes. It’s crucial to optimise learning, visual perception, and executive functions through experiences.
Children will be provided the opportunity to communicate, converse and express their ideas and opinions in a safe and friendly environment. They will learn to participate and learn how to ask for help by using language, learning how to manage non-verbal language and understand gestures and expressions. We encourage our children to be curious, creative, inventive and inquisitive about the activities. Activities include expressive narrative, “what happens next” and role-playing.
Interactive group play is essential aspect to school readiness. Children engage in fun activities that teach practicing taking turns, playing in cooperation, solving problems, communicating, making choices, and solving dilemmas, immersing into imagination, and they are provided with opportunities for empathy, perspective taking and practising kindness. We ensure we build a child’s resilience and learn to adjust to new social situations.
Children are provided a positive experience in a small group environment where they are encouraged to be themselves, allowing them to practice group surroundings prior to a classroom setting.
In the group children gain confidence in their ability to communicate with a small audience, identify their preference or choice and experience being heard, seen and validated by others. This creates an atmosphere of belonging, safety and security that boasts their autonomy and self-agency in the other social situations. As children experience success social and emotional experience, they build their identity and sense of self. A child is then better equipped to have satisfactory social relationships with others, creating resilience in new settings and independence as they feel they can rely on their positive experiences.
